Sremska Mitrovica is one of the oldest towns in our country. On the elevation called the Calvary, archeologists have discovered 7 thousand years old traces of organized human life. The town was named after the medieval monastery of Saint Demetrius. The original name Dmitrovica was later changed to Mitrovica.
The biggest town in Srem developed on the foundations of antic Sirmium, one of the capitals of the Roman Empire, which was the ruling centre of an immense expanse, from today’s Budapest to the Greek island of Crete. In the days of prosperity, Sirmium was one of the biggest cities of the old world.
Archeological research, which have been conducted systematically since 1957, have discovered an extremely rich residential and administrative centre, with numerous palaces, temples, streets and squares that used to comprise the core of the Roman city. The most significant and most appealing cultural values in Sremska Mitrovica are the archeological exhibition and lapidarium at the Museum of Srem, and the antic sites of the imperial Sirmium.
The Imperial Palace from the antic period was not a private one, such as the Diocletian’s Palace in Split or Galerius’s in u Gamzigrad, but the official imperial residence for one quarter of the Roman Empire. In 317, in it was born the son of Constantine the Great, who later became Emperor Constantius II and ruler of the Roman Empire from 337 until 361. The uncovered part of the palace is located in the wider town centre area of Sremska Mitrovica.
The Museum of Srem is an institution founded in order to preserve the material remains from Sirmium’s history. On the territory of the town of Sremska Mitrovica there are seven other cultural institutions which give a special air to the cultural life of the town, municipality and region: the Museum of Srem, “Lazar Vozarević” Gallery, “Gligorije Vozarević” Library, “Dobrica Milutinović” Theatre, Cultural Centre “Sirmiumart”, Historical Archive “Srem”, Institute for Preservation of Cultural Monuments, and the Institute for Cherishing Culture “Srem”. Cultural institutions are also the organizers of a number of manifestations
The oratory festival “Sirmium Lux Verbi” which takes place in June and Srem Folk Fest in August, have been included in the Calendar of manifestations of republic importance by the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Serbia.
The town took on its present-day appearance at the beginning of the 19th century when the streets were marked out, both churches completed, the hospital, silk factory and school built, and the city centre laid out.
Modern-day Sremska Mitrovica is a municipality with the population of 85 000 inhabitants, which, apart from the town core, also encompasses 23 residential settlements and two suburban settlements. The average altitude of the ground on which the town lies is 80.50 m above the sea level.
Sremska Mitrovica has an excellent position since it lies on a navigable river (there are two bridges – a road bridge and a pedestrian one). A highway and an international railroad go past the town. It is 60 km away from the Surčin Airport, while there is also a sports airport in the nearby Veliki Radinci. Therefore, the town is approachable by car, train, ship, and airplane.
Construction of the levee protected the town from high water levels and gave it a proper access to the river.
The beach on the Sava River in Sremska Mitrovica is considered to be one of the most beautiful waterfronts in the country. In summertime, this where a number of sports and cultural manifestations take place.
