Health Service

Sremska Mitrovica has been built on the foundations of the great metropolis of the antique world Sirmium, which had a highly developed medical service. Famous physicians and surgeons of the period were gathered around the royal palace, whose practice was based on the centuries old experience and written discussions of the Greek and Roman medicians.

The first hospital (built mainly for the needs of Petrovaradin military unit whose headquarters was in the town of Mitrovica) began working on the 7 May 1826. In the years and decades that followed, it has constantly been worked on for its improvement.

In 1963, a new hospital has been built, a bigger and more modern building where the gynecology service operates even today, whereas in 1996. a new surgery block of the Medical center of the Sremska Mitrovica town has been finished.
