Agriculture


Agriculture in Sremska Mitrovica is extremely versatile since the soil and climate conditions are favorable for all agricultural branches. Field crops production is dominated by growing high-yield varieties of maize, quality grains, and there is a significant presence of industrial crops.
Public production company ¨Mitrosrem¨ owns a cultivable area of over 8400 acres and large facilities for cattle fattening, as well as additional processing facilities. Within its seed department, ¨Mitrosrem¨ has a wide range of products of mercantile and seed production of maize, wheat, sugar beat, soy, and sunflower, and there are also various vegetable cultures. The predominant type of wheat production is the production of durum wheat and substantial quantities of seed wheat of different varieties and exceptional quality. The situation is similar in maize production. The produced quantities of seed maize are adjusted to different climates, conditions, and soil composition. ¨Corn-product¨ Company for processing maize for human consumption is operating as part of “Mitrosrem”. Through its quality and wide range of products, the company achieves significant results in foreign markets. ¨Mitrosrem¨ is also a leading producer of cattle for fattening, which is then processed in their facilities as well.
Agricultural Joint Stock Company “Čalma”, with 1200 acres of cultivable area in their property is orientated towards field crops production. Within its field crops department, there are also storage facilities for grain food, a silo, and a drying facility. In its property, the company has 24 acres of young apple plants as well. 70% of the company is owned by the consortium, and the remaining 30% by shareholders employed with the company. At the moment, a finalization centre for seed products is about to be opened.

Public production company “Mačva” produces field crops, and they have also built new facilities for fattening and processing of cattle, as well as facilities for storing grain food. 100 acres are farmed by the company, and 320 acres are leased out.
The range of products of the Joint Stock Company ¨Pinki¨ includes quality varieties of pear, apple, peach, sweet and sour cherry. 400 acres are planted with fruit. Apart from the fruit plantations, AD ¨Pinki¨ field crop division also produces wheat, soy, and maize. From the total area of 1250 acres, 288 acres are private property, and the remaining part is owned by the state.
"AGROSEME" is very successful in producing seed of agricultural crops, finalizing seed, supplying agricultural entrepreneurs with pesticides and artificial fertilizers. Production of seed wheat is organized on 3000 acres, seed maize on 750 acres and soy seed on about 700 acres. Apart from the prearranged finalization, "AGROSEME" also performs finalization services for sugar beat seed, alfalfa, and a number of vegetable cultures. On the annual level, the company delivers to domestic buyers over 10 thousand tons of seed wheat, 1200 tons of seed maize, and 1350 tons of seed soy. In 1999, the company exported 570 tons of seed wheat and 800 tons of seed maize. Production is organized in cooperation with prominent scientific institutes, such as the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops in Novi Sad, the Institute for Corn "Zemun polje", and the Agricultural Institute "Petar Drezgić" in Sremska Mitrovica. The Institute for Agriculture and Food Processing ’’Petar Drezgić’’ aids the dissemination of the latest domestic and foreign developments in this field and carries out various researches for the benefit of manufacturers and their goals of increasing the extent and quality of food production. The Institute also produces quality seed of a number of vegetable crops and special varieties of sugar beat.

 


Industry

Industrial production has a long tradition in the Municipality of Sremska Mitrovica and it occupies an important position in the town’s economy. The most significant industrial branches are:
-the food processing industry
-cellulose and paper production
-the metal processing industry
-the wood processing industry
-shipbuilding
-production of electrical power
and other branches of industry which include sand and gravel production, footwear manufacture, and clothing industry.
The food processing industry encompasses the bulk of the companies and makes 31% of the gross industrial production. Members of this branch are:
- Joint Stock Company “SL Mitros”,
- Joint Stock Company “Šećer plus šef”,
- Joint Stock Company “Žitpopromet-bratstvo”,
- PJ “Corn-product” Joint Stock Company,
-“SL Sremmil”,
- Joint Stock Company “Provamin’’ and
- “20 October” Brewery
Joint Stock Company “SL Mitros’’ meat-packing factory is the most significant company in the food processing industry.

’Šećer plus šef’’ commenced work on producing sugar in the autumn of 2005.
The food processing industry includes not only the flour-milling and baking industry and maize processing, which export a part of their products to foreign markets, but also the fodder production, and milk production and dairy products.
Public company “Matroz” produces cellulose and paper, and their primary activity is production of cellulose, newsprint and woodless paper, school stationery and various forms. This branch employs about 1100 workers, with production which makes approximately 25% of the gross industrial production of the Municipality of Sremska Mitrovica.
The metal industry produces car valves of top quality. “MIV” Joint Stock Company has got almost its entire production into the foreign markets.
Within the Correctional Facility in Sremska Mitrovica there is the “Dubrava’’ company, which produces wheels for tractors and trailers and a part of their products is exported to foreign markets.
The wood processing industry has the longest tradition in our Municipality and the branch comprises the new Wood Plant and “Kalera’’ Ltd., the company which was taken over by the former Fudin “1 November’’. This branch works in primary and secondary wood processing which encompasses production of wood planks, plywood, veneer, parquet, elements, and internal doors.
Within the “Panonska elektrana’’ power supply company there is the “TE-TO” Sremska Mitrovica company which produces electricity and industrial steam.
The shipbuilding branch produces and maintains ships. The “Sava” Shipyard has a long tradition in producing and repairing ships. It mostly operates on custom orders from foreign buyers and 95% of their products are made for export.
The ”Diana” shoe factory produces footwear. It was taken over by the leather-goods factory “Kožara” from Ruma and it is expected to commence production.
Public Company “Sirmodeks” is a company whose primary activity is clothes production.
”Luka Leget” works in sand and gravel production, as well as in river transport.


Small and medium-sized enterprises 
In accordance with the current worldwide trends in economy and industry, and simultaneously with the privatization process, the number of small and middle-size companies in Sremska Mitrovica is growing rapidly.
Over 4000 workers are employed in about 20 medium-sized and over 450 small enterprises, which are every year increasingly taking a larger percentage in the gross production in Sremska Mitrovica.
20 to 30 most significant enterprises are located in a separate industrial zone in the town on Voganjski Road.
Enterprises are founded in various fields – food production, civil engineering, wood processing and furniture manufacture, production of paper and cardboard packaging, machines and equipment manufacture, clothing production, fodder production, etc.  


The Free-Trade Zone:
The harbor complex “Luka Legat” includes the Free-Trade Zone, covering an area of three and a half acres, it comprises companies that do business under special conditions. It is situated in the industrial zone and possesses all infrastructure facilities.
It is a major traffic intersection used for loading, storage, control and sales of goods. The road and railway network connecting West and South Europe, and the use of the navigable Sava represent an advantage for a stronger business co-operation of our and foreign companies.
