Sremska Mitrovica developed on the foundations of the Roman city Sirmium, and from its name was derived the name of the entire region between the Sava and Danube rivers – today’s Srem. The new settlement got its present-day name after the medieval monastery of Saint Demetrius: originally Dmitrovica and later Mitrovica.
The ancient Sirmium is known as one of the capitals of the Roman Empire with all traits of an antic metropolis. According to the data of old historians and geographers, Sirmium had over one hundred thousand inhabitants. Herodotus claims Sirmium to be the largest city in Pannonia, and Ammianus Marcellinus even calls it “Glorious populous mother of cities“. Six Roman emperors were born in Sirmium and its surrounding. They were Romanized natives who rose to the Roman throne through brilliant military career. Two great persons stand out among them - Aurelian and Probus. Emperor Aurelian (270-275) is one of the greatest military emperors of the late antic period. He was the first Roman emperor to call himself ruler and god (dominus et deus), and who strived to create a worldwide empire united under one religion. He is said to have been the direct spiritual descendant of Alexander the Great, which is why he bore the title “Restorer of the Empire” (Restitutor Orbis). Emperor Probus’s (276-282) origin was one of a humble Sirmium family. He ascended to the Roman throne as a result of his magnificent military career, and then he became famous as a great builder and reformer. His name is related to capital economic enterprises in the antic Srem: introduction of vine growing and digging of melioration canals, some of which are still in use to this day. Archeological excavations, which have been conducted systematically in Mitrovica since 1957, have unearthed an extremely rich and luxurious residential and administrative centre with numerous palaces, baths, temples, streets, and squares, which once comprised the core of the Roman city.

In the territory of the town of Sremska Mitrovica there are eight cultural institutions which give a special air to the cultural life of the town, municipality and region: the Museum of Srem, “Lazar Vozarević” Gallery, “Gligorije Vozarević” Library, “Dobrica Milutinović” Theatre, Cultural Centre “Sirmiumart”, Historical Archive “Srem”, Institute for Preservation of Cultural Monuments, and the Institute for Cherishing Culture “Srem”. CULTURAL INSTITUTIONS ARE THE ORGANIZERS OF A NUMBER OF MANIFESTATIONS, MOSTLY FESTIVALS, WHICH MAKES MITROVICA THE TOWN OF FESTIVALS.
THE TOWN OF SREMSKA MITROVICA IS THE TOWN OF SPORTS, the town of Olympic athletes from the Olympic Games in Athens, such as OGNJEN FILIPOVIĆ, 200 meters kayak pairs world champion of the 34th World Championship in Zagreb in 2006 and DRAGANA TOMAŠEVIĆ, the winner of numerous medals in discus, who, after participating in the Olympics in Athens, won the 7th place in the World Championship in Helsinki. The most popular sports are football (there are football clubs in almost every residential settlement in the municipality), American football, athletics, basketball, and kayak.

- GEOGRAPHICAL POSITION
In the territory of the municipality there are about 85 000 inhabitants, that is, 113 inhabitants per square kilometer. In total there are 26 settlements connected by 263 kilometers of traffic routes. The town of Sremska Mitrovica represents the economic, administrative, and cultural centre of the region and the head office of the Srem District.
Sremska Mitrovica has an excellent position since it lies on a navigable river (there are two bridges – a road bridge and a pedestrian one). A highway and an international railroad go past the town. It is 60 km away from the Surčin Airport, while there is also a sports airport in the nearby Veliki Radinci. Therefore, the town is approachable by car, train, ship, and airplane.

Out of the 17 Orthodox monasteries located on the slopes of Fruška Gora, the following four are on the territory of the Municipality of Sremska Mitrovica: ŠIŠATOVAC, PETKOVICA, KUVEŽDIN I ĐIPŠA.
